Chaulmoogra Oil

Hydnocarpus wightianus or chaulmoogra is a tree in the Achariaceae family. Hydnocarpus wightiana seed oil has been widely used in Indian medicine and Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of leprosy. It entered early Western medicine in the nineteenth century before the era of sulfonamides and other antibiotics for the treatment of several skin diseases and leprosy. The oil was prescribed for leprosy as a mixture suspended in gum or as an emulsion.

Benefits of Chaulmoogra Seed Oil

Healing of Cuts And Bruises

Chaulmoogra seed oil is helpful in speeding up the healing process when it comes to regular cuts and bruises. Whilst it might sting a little, adding a couple of drops of the oil (with a carrier) to the bruise or the cut will help to reduce pain, cleanse the area, prevent bacteria, and speed up healing overall. Compared to healing without the oil, versus with it, you will definitely notice a difference.

Can Reduce Eczema and Skin Rashes

Applying chaulmoogra seed oil to the skin can help to soothe and boost the healing of psoriasis, as well as general redness and rashes. Of course, finding out what is causing the rash should be your first port of call, but the oil can certainly help to soothe, calm down, and heal the rash. Eczema flare-ups, in particular, have been shown to react very positively to chaulmoogra seed oil.

Useful in Skin Prone to Allergic Dermatitis And Reactions

If your skin reacts easily or badly to allergies, e.g. stings, bites, or other irritants, using chaulmoogra oil could be a good way to reduce the problem. Once the reaction occurs, e.g. redness, blisters, soreness, applying the oil can help to alleviate the symptoms quite quickly and boost the natural healing process from within. The antibacterial properties will also help to avoid any infection which may come as a result of a sting or bite too.

Useful in Psoriasis

There are many natural oils that are known to be useful in helping with psoriasis symptoms, but chaulmoogra oil is one of the most effective around. The patchy, red and rough areas which are synonymous with psoriasis can be soothed and healed with a few drops of the oil. The infection is treated, due to the antibacterial properties, and the skin will begin to heal itself.

As a side note, the oil is great for treating sprains and joint pain, as well as reducing muscle spasms.

The powerful nature of the plant and its extracted oil has drawn some skepticism, but the results really do speak for themselves. The oil is safe to use and can be mixed with other essential oils, to create a potent mixture of healing benefits.

The fact that the oil has been used in ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for many years adds to its kudos, but there is no denying its many skin benefits.
